Anna Cabana

A woman rejects her affluent family to pursue a bohemian life as an artist, with tragic results.

In 1970s San Francisco, a woman leaves her privileged life, her son and husband, adopts the name Anna Cabana and becomes well-known as a freethinker and artist. She is idealized by a young waitress at the coffee bar she frequents. The waitress, Pam, is present at a crowded car stop on Market Street when Anna is killed under the wheels of a streetcar. There is some confusion among those in the crowd as to whether she fell or was pushed by someone with long blond hair.

Also present there is a young man who has recently moved to the city. Stunned by the tragedy, Pam accosts him and they discuss what each of them saw. The next day the young man, Lev, reads a story about Anna's death in the local newspaper which is very different from what the girl told him. He tracks her down but she refuses to go to the authorities with her account. "Why do you think the story came out the way it did? The cover-up is already on! Someone wants it to be like that. Someone powerful." She explains further what she saw, and Lev pursues the story, in the process becoming friendly with Pam and then betraying her. At an exhibit of Anna's photographs Lev gains an insight into her tragedy.
