The novel describes the protagonist Nuno's inner journey to himself. The story tells of his difficult childhood, his search for recognition and attention, and his deep longing to find his place in this world. As if driven, he goes from one painful experience to the next until he finally fails all along the line and wreaks havoc with his life. Piece by piece, he puts himself and the puzzle of his life back together again. An inner process of realization almost tears him apart and lets him look deep into his manly soul. Nuno becomes a modern hero who breaks down the prevailing image of men. The novel is intertwined with the cinematic love story with his childhood friend Maila. They meet when they are eight, become lovers briefly at 28, but lose sight of each other through a theatrical event. After failed marriages, they finally meet again at age 48 and become a happy couple. Together they learn the rules of love and try to understand and break through their fears, which have accompanied them since childhood. Themes of transformation, especially personal growth and essential insights of the Greek philosophers, lead the protagonist to his inner wholeness and the desire to give something back to society. In his quest to make the world a little better, Nuno trusts that everything is interconnected and that a reversal for the better is always possible.
