Among such a defence is a high-tech specialised force codenamed the EAF, or 'Evangelion Air Force' - this team who pilot fighter jets that have been discontinued but retrofitted with advanced tech that'll leave any and all aircraft in their jet wash. 
And as such, they need pilots to handle these planes...
