There were plenty of things in Heather's life that did not go according to plan.

She never bet on being thrown into an apocalypse, losing everything except her best friend, Tess. She never thought that Tess would become a smuggler alongside two brothers---one that left pretty early on, and one that disagreed with her more than the Cordyceps infection would.

Worst of all, she never would have expected that the man she fell in love with, stubborn, closed off, and moody, seemed to have room for everyone in his life except her.

Sometimes, though, in the briefest of moments, she could imagine what it would be like if things were different.

Wouldn't that be nice?

Joel Miller x OC

While this book follows Season 1 of the show, there are some elements of the game throughout the story as well.

WARNINGS: Most of the warnings come from things that happen in the show/game, including swearing, gruesome violence, suicide, and mentions of rape. Specific warnings will be placed at the beginning of each chapter as necessary.

I own absolutely nothing except Heather's actions in the book, her backstory, and everything within that backstory.

Laura knew the dangers of her world. Between Cordyceps and the survivors, she often wondered how she'd made it twenty years. Lacking a purpose, she acted as a FEDRA plant for the Fireflies before she became the guardian of an immune kid. Ellie. But, of course, her life wasn't challenging enough already. And so, to stay with her kid she'd have to work with 'Texas'. He was a reminder of why it was dangerous to let people in - a reminder of her biggest regret. Joel never forgot 'Quebec', a person with whom he'd shared parts of himself he never wanted seen. It was safe to do so with her, because they'd agreed never to share their real names. It was a failed attempt at emotional detachment, which was why he'd never admit how much it hurt when she'd left four years ago. But when they have to cooperate to get Ellie across the country, he's confronted with their entwined history. Joel just wants to survive long enough to find his brother, and all he can do is prevent Laura from pulling him in again. He didn't realise he was already drowning until they made code words. 'Silver' meant 'help'... God help anyone that made Laura say 'silver'. ||Joel Miller Fan-Fiction - The Last of Us|| ||basically a season 1 rewrite with a new OC and an epilogue correction to what will happen in season 2 iykyk - 🏌‍♀️|| ||canon-typical violence, swearing, and trauma I guess|| ||complete - undergoing edits|| notable rankings: #1 in joelmiller #1 in tlou #1 in thelastofus #1 in mutualpining #1 in foundfamily

MATURE READ: We loved each other with fragments of ourselves that were dead - Nikita Gill Love. Such a poignant emotion. Such a terrifying feeling to give into. One that is stored right in the precious cavity of the heart. A sentiment that can turn the toughest of people plush but can forge such an aggressive desire to protect. A dangerous intensity, even more so when you're left to find it in the obsolete remains of what was once planet Earth. Or Joel finds himself catching feelings for an existing resident of Jackson. Feelings that he just can't seem to ignore but it's not all plain sailing as they navigate through one another's trauma. Disclaimer to say that I do not own the last of us or any of the canon characters, these belong to naughty dog. I will be using references from both the HBO show and the game so I'll let you guys decide who you want to base the canon characters on :) Notable rankings: #1 in Joelmiller #1 in fungus #3 in pandemic #7 in lastofus
