Set in Carreg Dun, a fictional port town on the coast of Wales. The town is perched on cliffs, with narrow cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and a looming stone watchtower that has been abandoned for generations. The nearby moors and wild coastline lend a windswept, isolated feel, and the sea plays a large role in both the economy and the atmosphere of the novel. The time period, 1682, is in the heart of the Restoration era, shortly after the English Civil War, with tensions between royalists, parliamentarians, and smugglers creating a volatile political backdrop.
