After her brother emerged victorious in the 54th Hunger Games, sixteen-year-old Maizee Hyacinth thought she was safe from being reaped. She had spent years believing that she was protected from being chosen as a tribute, as it hadn't happened before unless siblings volunteered. Her brother's winnings and fame added to her sense of security. However, her certainty was shattered when her name was unexpectedly plucked from the glass bowl, and she found herself chosen as a tribute for the 66th annual Hunger Games.

Like all children in his world, 14-year-old Finnick Odair had the chance of being chosen for the Hunger Games. In a pool stock full of names, he was just as vulnerable as anyone from the ages of 12-18.
