Ten-year-old Brydee Prescott has learned to stay silent. Mute since her sister's tragic infection, she hides her fears behind a grumpy facade, watching as the undead roam freely and danger lurks at every corner.
Life in the Quarantine Zone is bleak, but Brydee's greatest worry is her father, who vanished on a secret mission for the Fireflies six weeks ago, leaving behind nothing but unanswered questions and a promise to return.
Desperate to find him, Brydee hatches a daring plan. She sneaks into the back of a Firefly truck, hoping it will lead her to her father. But instead, she ends up trapped in the State House, surrounded by the chilling remnants of the Fireflies-only their dead bodies remain. Just when Brydee thinks she might never escape, three strangers appear: Joel, Tess, and Ellie, a fearless girl with a mysterious secret-she's immune to the Cordyceps virus.
Things lead to another, the State House blows up with, regrettably Tess in it. Not having anyone but each other, Joel, Ellie and Brydee embark on a harrowing journey to track down the elusive Fireflies, with Brydee determined to find her father.
Along the way, she discovers that the fight for survival is as much about finding hope and family as it is about facing the undead.
