Evelyn Chen is a young author, who struggles to cope with the demands of too much privilege and too little passion in her writing pursuits. Tied to an arranged marriage which begins right after a fateful mail order bride collaboration, Evelyn frowns upon the immodest and presumptuous prince, Cole Carafa. She also wonders about the overall design and where she fits in with all the present demands from the related family and politics. Love him or hate him, to her he is everything that she does not want to be: charming and yet she cannot help being drawn to him. The teasing and laughing done by his exasperates her, forcing her to think about where that level of attraction comes from in her. Another problem which must be addressed is actually how she feels about the match; however, through their interactions, Evelyn begins to reconsider the distaste she harbored for him. However, the two are not left to even try to enjoy their newfound calm as lo and behold, Coles brother Vincent's appearance in their troubled lives. Ominous statements are made, and tension is gathering; their friends and family are getting thrown right into another sweet but dangerous project. As Evelyn figures out complex feelings for the man who once filled her with so much rage, strength ceases to strike her as standing on her two feet without considering parts of her that people defend so furiously, but in their expansiveness.
