Il soggetto affetto da sindrome di Stoccolma, durante i maltrattamenti subiti, prova un sentimento positivo nei confronti del proprio aguzzino, che si può spingere fino all'amore, facendo sì che si crei una sorta di alleanza e solidarietà tra la vittima e il carnefice.
