Prologue
The only thing that stuck in my mind was the man dressed as Elvis. His voice rang through the small, neon-lit chapel, drowning out the distant hum of slot machines and the laughter of revelers outside. "I now pronounce you, in the state of Las Vegas, Nevada... married. You may kiss."For a moment, everything felt like a dream I hadn't woken from-surreal and out of focus. The pastel-colored lights threw odd shadows across the altar, and the scent of cheap roses hung in the air like a bizarre perfume. The words echoed in my ears, reverberating against the walls of my mind, but that one word-married-snapped me back to reality. Married. To her.

The best decision I ever made was when I moved to paradise nine years ago. I've met and entertained many beautiful women while living here in Hawaii, with those women changing what I first thought would be paradise and making it to be more of an erotic heaven. I love women, and I love satisfying them. But the only way they make it to my bed is if they're tourists. Why? Because there are no ties, no feelings hurt, no strings attached, and I'll never see them again-just pure innocent sex satisfying both our needs. Now I'm on an airplane, going back to the one place I always said I would never step foot in ever again. Las Vegas. All because Vegas is where my best friend wants to have his bachelor party. Just because I'm not happy to be back in my hometown doesn't mean I can't have fun, right? After all, I can still do what I've been doing in Hawaii here in Vegas as there are always tourists roaming the casinos. Before my friends and I hit the casino, I made a thousand-dollar bet with my best friend that I couldn't land a woman in my bed before we returned to Hawaii-a bet I want no part of after meeting who I did. That bet will come to haunt me after we get back home, especially when we cross paths at my best friend's wedding. I was happy to see her, but she wasn't too pleased to see me, and let's just say somewhere I screwed up because my face not only saw her fist once, but it saw it twice. She just lit the fire in me, and I never thought I'd say this, but I guess my entertaining women days are over because right now, there's only one woman who I want to chase, and that's Leilani. Halfway through her walk, her secretary appeared. Helena stopped to hear what he had to say. My vision for this long awaited day shattered when she tossed her veil away. "Excuse me!" The sound of my heart breaking into tiny little pieces was deafening and the murmurs of shocked family, friends and guests were muted. The wedding official's voice cut through. "Are you ok, dear?" Was I? For someone who was left standing at the altar... A jilted bride... I pushed the pain away, "I'm alright." The signs were always there. I only have myself to blame for the humiliation I had to suffer again today. I fell in love on my own so it was only fair to hurt alone. Fairy tale endings weren't for everyone; I knew this at the back of my mind. I may be foolish for thinking it but I always believed love has requirements; a beautiful face, a kind heart, deep pockets, a backbone - the list goes on. The requirements to be loved in return varied in proportions. So... Did I meet the standards? I had the money to entice her family. I had the backbone to stand by my decision to marry. I have a heart that loves her alone. I just fell a bar under beautiful. One could say I was passable. Somewhere along the line I must have missed and failed a mark... Just passable... Maybe that was the reason why she just passed me by. © All rights reserved
