Twyla has been betrothed, betrothed to death.
Twyla always knew she would marry someone of her parents choice and she didn't mind. However, it's one thing to be engaged to an upper class male and something else entirely to be betrothed.
While engaged is to have formally agreed to marry, very similar to being betrothed, to Twyla being betrothed is so much worse.
Especially as Twyla has had the (mis)fortune of being betrothed to death. And we all know there is only one way to become one with this abstract entity, don't we.
