Ezili Laurent has always lived with two realities. One is the world everyone sees: a seventeen-year-old Haitian Creole boy who is forced to leave Miami after his mother is incarcerated and sent to live in a rough Florida neighborhood with relatives he barely knows. At his new school, his softer presence makes him an easy target-fuel for rumors, cruelty, and assumptions that he'll never amount to much. The other reality is harder to explain. It exists in whispers that feel too specific to ignore, in faces that seem familiar in ways no one can trace, and in dreams that leave behind the uneasy sense that something is already in motion before it happens. The adults around him tell him to trust facts over feelings. His grandmother tells him some people are born closer to things the rest of the world refuses to see. When students begin disappearing, Ezili is the first to notice the patterns no one else wants to connect. But the more answers he tries to find, the more the story seems to shift-like something is adjusting itself around him, staying just out of reach. Two boys pull him in different directions: one feared by everyone but strangely gentle when no one is watching, the other charming, protective, and slowly becoming too invested in Ezili's every move. Meanwhile, the people around him start treating him like a question they can't quite solve. As the disappearances continue, the truth feels less like something to discover and more like something being carefully arranged. And Ezili can't tell anymore whether he's following the pattern... or if the pattern has already started following him. Because in the end, nothing in this town is happening by accident
