The year is 1989. In the small town of Mellow Meadows, Ohio, a young couple named Arthur and Julie Burton find their lives put to an end after a car accident gets them killed. Now ghosts, they are tasked with haunting their home until the time comes for them to move on into the afterlife. In the meantime, they reunite with Angelia, a nine-year-old girl who was under foster care with the Burtons at the time of their deaths and survived the crash that killed them, and they do their best to be parents to her despite their spectral status.

However, as their relationship strengthens, they must also contend with Angelia's abusive father, Todd, who is not pleased at the prospect of his meal ticket being taken away from him. Fortunately, they have allies both living and dead in the form of Janet Delano, Julie's stuck-up but loyal older sister (and Arthur's sister-in-law) and Chester, the Burtons' friendly but neurotic caseworker in death.
