Modeling for Gillian
This story follows Gillian Brown, a frustrated seventeen-year-old art student trapped in the monotony of drawing the same still life-a chipped vase and bruised apples-week after week. Her disappointment stems from the cancellation of promised life drawing sessions with dancer Elara Finch, whose insecure boyfriend deemed the artistic study "inappropriate." Gillian yearns to capture the dynamism of the human form, believing true artistry lies in observing light on living anatomy rather than static objects. Her teacher, Ms. Thorne, sympathizes but struggles to find a replacement model in their small town of Willow Creek, leaving the class in artistic stagnation.
Seeking solace after class, Gillian visits her favorite cafe, The Steaming Cup, where she witnesses Lina, the warm and capable waitress she admires, distraught over drastically reduced hours. Lina reveals her manager cut her shifts to five hours a week to favor a relative, leaving her financially desperate. As Gillian observes Lina's inherent grace and strong figure-something she's unconsciously sketched before-an impulsive idea forms: Lina could be the life model Ms. Thorne needs. Blinded by her own artistic frustration and Lina's vulnerability, Gillian clumsily proposes the job, horrifying Lina with the implication of nudity. The awkward encounter ends with Lina fleeing behind the counter and Gillian escaping the cafe in shame, realizing she reduced Lina to a solution rather than respecting her dignity.
