In my passion project, Tales From the Ninth Realm, we meet Tyra, a little girl who is reading a book called Tales of Norse Gods for Children and Youth. This is that book. It is real, written in 1887 by Swedish author Kata Dalström who wanted to make the myths of the Nordic gods and heroes accessible "for those whose imaginations can take the free, powerful worldview of the gods and giants, and spin it into something personal."
In that same spirit, I have translated her tales from the original, old Swedish. In doing so, I wanted to preserve the core of the myths and explore ways to retell them that honour both the past and the present. The retellings are published separately. Here, I give you the original text, chapter by chapter, interspersed with my annotations.
