Courtney was Luke's best friend until she fell into depression and there was no one to catch her. Not until Mark came along and everything was okay, apart from Luke was being torn apart every time he saw them - but it was making her happy, the relationship, so he was 'Fine'. Mark brutally broke up with Courtney and now she won't talk to anyone. Courtney has depression again but it's worse - and Luke has to bring her out of it.
