Xander Jacobs has just lost his mother in a freak accident his junior year. His father left him alone, saying that he was leaving his problems. Xander goes into a great depression as he realizes that he is alone and has no one. Xander quits the varsity football team causing everyone to freak out. Xander was the start player, he was going to help them get to championships. After the team loses they blame it on Xander and taunt him saying he is too weak to handle life. His depression worsens as his mind travels to deep and morbid thoughts. Clara Reed has always wanted attention, she always craved it. Being a kid she was always shy and no one ever paid any attention to her. As she got older her desire to get attention got worse but she never did anything to be noticed, she was still shy. This lack of attention sends her into depression and she might go to extremes to get out. They don't know it yet, but they need each other more than they would ever imagine.
