Whether she's playing her upright bass with the school band or listening to her favorite albums, 16-year-old Jess Dunn lives for music. Unfortunately there's only one other person in the tiny working class town of Grenville, California, who shares her enthusiasm: Chris , the world's most uptight drummer and one of Jess' least-favorite people.
That changes when an exclusive art school closes suddenly, forcing a group of former art students to enroll in Grenville's conservative rural public school, and sparking a major culture class. Among the transfer students are two new music students: Eric, a talented pianist who quickly becomes one of Jess' closest friends, and Josh, a seriously cute guitarist with an enticing punk rock edge.
Before long, a music class project has Jess teaming up with her oldest rival, her newest friend, and the hottest guy she's ever seen in real life. Now the group has just a few weeks to complete their assignment and prepare an audition that will earn them a spot in the school's fall showcase. They might even have what it takes to form a real band---if their tangled relationships don't get in the way.
After the death of her best friend and the torment from one of the popular girls at school, Angela Taylor decides she's had enough and decides to commit suicide. Her neighbor, Adrian, just happened to be the one who saved her. But she's not supposed to know that. Adrian is the school's "bad boy." He drives a motorcycle, he smokes, and he seems not to care about anything. All the girls want him. But when Angela and Adrian are put together for a history project, Angela is surprised by how kind Adrian acts. Will the two be able to break down the social barriers of what's expected? And, more importantly, will Angela be able to open up to him completely? All of these questions are details Angela must include in her therapy sessions. She is forced to detail every moment of her life from the last few months, up until the moment her life changed forever. Can she do it?
