Envy

Newly-minted nineteen-year-old Alice McClaughry tried to keep her head down; wait out the end of her delayed final year of high school, avoid notice, get good grades, and most importantly, keep her family name a secret. This all crashes down when the bitter reality of her parents' deaths populates headlines: two of the most wealthy people in the country are dead. The press paints it as an unexpected tragedy, but others suspect foul play.

Her entire world spirals out of control. While Alice seeks support from her friend Bianca, her friend's attentions are focused elsewhere: Mr. Sterling, Bianca's father, comes to town after his unannounced departure four years prior. The girl's elation does not last long; his affections appear to be conditional, and Bianca grows suspicious over his peculiar fixation on the nineteen-year-old Alice McClaughry.

Alice grows bitter and obsessive. She would never have thought herself one for revenge. And she most certainly had never thought herself one to pursue a forbidden older man. Certainly not Vincent Sterling, the father of her best friend.
