Serena was a traveling with her twin brother, Timothy, when their ship was hit by a storm. Serena was washed ashore in the Kanto region, but Timothy appeared to have perished. In order to make a living, Serena disguised herself as a man, taking Timothy's name, to work for the ruler of Kanto, Duke Satoshi Ketchum.
