Aspen is a boy who was forced to join the army to save his once best friend and first love. Plagued by the things he has done and the people he killed, he does everything he can to survive, alone. But the memories of his past friend, Kai, continue to run on replay as he tries to please the suspecting officials who watch over him like a hawk. Kai has been searching for Aspen since the day he sold his life for her, and she must continue to escape from danger if she wishes to free her friend who is in misery because of her. She treks from city to city, avoiding soldiers, gangs, and criminals. She also has in her care Aspen's orphaned sister, Alice, whom she swore to watch over after Aspen left her behind to save Kai's life, but did she really deserve Aspen's kindness?
