In the second volume of the Lucian Moonshade saga, the fragile balance between the Magical Realm and the Mortal Realm is at risk. After sealing the Void of Eternity in their first year, Lucian, Lyra, and Elowen return to Solara Academy for their second year, hoping for a quieter time. But their hopes are quickly dashed when mysterious disturbances begin to appear in the Mortal Realm-evidence that the Void's influence has seeped through the barriers between realms.

The Elders of Solara reveal that the boundary between their world and the Mortal Realm is weakening. Strange occurrences are being reported in the human town of Greybrook, where shadows move on their own, and portals flicker into existence. Lucian and his companions are tasked with crossing into the Mortal Realm to investigate the source of the disturbance. There, they discover an ancient rift in an abandoned mine, and encounter new enemies-beings from the Void determined to break the seal and bring darkness to both realms.

As the rift widens and the danger increases, Lucian must once again draw on the power of the Daystone and his connection to both light and dark magic.
