Peeta didn't lie in the interview, well he did but little did he know that Katniss was actually pregnant. She was going into the games 5 months pregnant. Snow knew she was pregnant though, he gave her a test right before the games. Therefore he sees her value and instead of Peeta he takes her to the Capitol. Leaving Peeta with the rebels.
