"You need to wake up." His voice was gentler now, almost pleading. "This isn't love, Annie. This isn't..." He took a deep breath. "This isn't healthy."

"You don't understand," I said adamantly. "He's different now. He's trying."

Niall's expression hardened. "And these?" His fingers hovered towards my neck, where the marks lay. He dropped his hand before he touched them. "This is him trying?"

I flinched, taking a step back. "I should go."

"To him?" Niall asked, voice cracking. "So he can do worse? So he can continue lying right to your face?"

"That's not fair," I snapped, walking up so our faces were inches apart. I felt so much anger towards him right now that I almost couldn't contain it. His words hurt me, and he said them so effortlessly...

I wanted to hurt him the way he hurt me, it was a constant war within me not to lash out at him. I knew I had to leave before I did, my fuse was running short.

"No, what's not fair is watching someone you-" He cut himself off, turning away. When he faced me again, his eyes were hard. "What's not fair is watching someone you care about walk willingly back into a fire and not being able to stop them."
