Her breath came in ragged gasps as he shoved her toward the car, his grip bruising her arm. Amara resisted, stumbling over the gravel. "I'm not leaving!" she cried, wiping blood from her cheek.
Gunshots rang out-faint but getting closer.
"You don't understand!" His voice was desperate. "It's not safe here. You need to go now!" He tried to pull her back to the car, where guards stood with rifles.
"I'm pregnant," she whispered.
He froze, eyes widening, then darkened with pain. "That's why you have to leave. They know about you, and now they'll know about this."
More shots. She flinched but stood firm. "I'm not leaving without you!"
Her breath hitched. "You're bleeding..."
"It doesn't matter." He cut her off. "You have to go."
The guards moved closer. "I'll find you," he promised. "But if they catch you-" His gaze fell to her stomach. "They'll kill you. And our child."
Tears blurred her vision. "How can you ask me to leave?"
"I will," he insisted. "But you have to go. Now."
She cried out, reaching for him as the guards pulled her away. He stood there, blood staining the ground. The last thing she saw was him mouthing, "I love you."
