Layla lives in a struggling family, held together by her mother's hard work.
Her father, an abusive alcoholic, does little to support them, leaving her mother to earn what little they have by selling vegetables from their small garden.
Though still a student, Layla shoulders the heavy responsibilities at home, taking care of her three younger brothers and managing the household like a mother to them.

Layla's cousin, Yusuf, is her closest friend and confidant. He comes from a wealthy family, a world apart from hers.

While she feels a strong bond with him, his siblings look down on her because of her poverty-a reality that Layla faces every day. Usually abusing her in return to give her food or clothes.

"You are doing it for your brothers"
She repeated it every morning so as not to cry.
