Humans, animals, plants- any living matter that comes in contact with it quickly faces its immense mutational power, sparking nothing but unruly destruction. This living nightmare demanded more than a simple adaptation, it forced a complete overhaul on daily life. Yet, despite humanity's best efforts to adapt to this new system- cities plummeted to the ground, nations were obliterated in chaotic arrays of fire, countries infected by the scourge of madness brought about by meaningless war. Humanity was driven to the brink of extinction. In a desperate attempt to survive these conditions, humanity came up with something to protect them. Colonies. A radius considered a "Safe Zone", as it incapacitates any infected attempting to breach its perimeter. Its the perfect environment to rebuild what's left of society. On the flip-side, the infected create nests of their own, producing genetic amalgams beyond human comprehension, and attracting many others of their kind. It is assumed that their sole objective is to propagate. Consume. These are called "Contamination Zones", and their increased numbers have caused dozens of Colonies, and outposts alike, to suffer breaches and irreversible changes all over the continent. The infected are ruthlessly growing stronger. Rhys, the Warden of Zamaton Colony, has taken measures to prevent the catastrophic events from ever reaching their quiet life, where Kayden Moss, the survivalist in question, has lived for the past 3 years. If all goes well, they'll avoid these breaches, Or so it seems...
The Apocalypse
The ice deep in the north has melted to reveal a new world hidden under the ice. It holds vegetation and animals that seem unworldly when compared to ours, but hidden in the deepest part of this world is another cave with the oldest surviving strains of an ancient bacteria capable of taking host of dead creatures and reanimating them into beasts worse than before. This strain had grown weak over the ages and was nearly extinct, but the human immune system, never being exposed to this, caused the strain to thrive inside its new unexpecting host and spreads out to the world. It starts small, just a speck on the hands of a few people, but soon, it spreads to door handles, pens, books, chairs, things like that. It continues spreading and now has infected its first corpse, the remains of an ant. This new creature comes and spreads to that ant's nest and then to the animals that eat them. Before less than a month passed, the virus had spread to a graveyard in the hidden grottos of the Yukon. This virus, now able to think from the new minds of fresh bodies, can strategize. In only another week, the epidemic had spread to the northern edge of the United States. Spreading further and further in, people began to notice this strange happening. From people disappearing to entire towns popping out of existence, the bacteria continued to spread. To keep order, the governments had those who disappeared erased from existence, but it wasn't enough. The takeover of those long gone happened in less than three weeks and society collapsed. Spreading overseas, it began its removal of life in Europe, but that's a story for another day. We now come to those few remaining settlements in the collapsed U.S, now called The Crumbled Land. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high.
