 Evangeline ansiava por uma liberdade que aparentava ser impossível, principalmente com James sobrevoando sobre ela como um falcão controlando todos os seus movimentos como se um passo em falso fosse capaz de condenar toda a sua linhagem. Portanto, estava obstinada a tomar a mudança como um começo para a conquista da sua liberdade, deixando, ao menos por um tempo, o título de Evangeline Delamontagne-Riviére para ser somente a Evangeline de Avonlea.
