With a parent who wasn't around and a parent who is a drunk, she didn't know what it felt like to be loved. After she met the gang, she never wanted to leave. Ever.

*This story first takes place a year before the book takes place. I decided to make the Curtis boy's parents die in November of 1963. 7 months before the story starts. Dakota is 15 but will later turn 16 when we get closer to the book story line*
