A sequel to the Bright Colours Of Misery:

There sits a young girl, head down bowed toward the altar, her hands together, as she prays to understand. Marianne, as she is called, believes in God because there is never anyone else to turn to, but when not even the Lord answers her questions, she sets out to find the answer herself. The question is: Who gave her up all those years ago, at nearly four weeks old?

Wilma Seide, newly head nurse at a hospital in Berlin where she has worked for decades can't seem to be content with this tremendous achievement, with half of her family left to celebrate with it seems futile, pointless in a fundamental way. She is busy clinging to secrets she has buried deep, under layers of shame and determination, though despite her best efforts they bubble up to the surface to rock her world and those that remain around her, most notably her little sister Heidi.
