Jacob liked to think of himself as nonchalant. He wore that dismissiveness like an armor, always a little aloof, giving the impression that nothing much could faze him. Emotional maturity? That, too, was part of his image-or at least what he thought of as maturity: cool-headed, distant, above it all. But with university starting, he sensed that might not be enough.
