It's the early 1920's, and life isn't easy for anyone. With the stock market crash, the struggle for women's rights, and the Tulsa Race Massacre, it's easy for even an adult to feel overwhelmed. But for these two teenagers, life couldn't be any scarier.
Blanche is troubled. She's been writing to her "pen pal", Leo, for 6 months without her parents' or siblings' knowledge, and-unfortunately-has fallen in love with him. Each night, she'll write him a letter and send it to him, with the help of her pet dove, Angelica. But, one of her brothers seems to be catching on to her secret, and she doesn't know how long it'll be before her entire family knows.
Leo is hopelessly in love. He's never met Blanche, but the way she writes to him makes him feel...wanted. Like all of his family's abuse can be put aside, and he can find someone who actually cares about him. And, ever since his mother died, he's been in an even worse situation. As long as he can keep the exchanges a secret for a few more weeks, he'll be able to leave his home and set out to find Blanche. But keeping a secret from 7 older brothers isn't easy.
