Once, there had been a world of noise. Voices shouting, machines rumbling, the sound of life thrumming everywhere. Now, all of that was gone, replaced by a vast, empty silence. The world had turned into a ghost of itself, abandoned, decayed. People, those who were left, stayed in shadows, hiding from the things that roamed. She, too, hid. But she didn't hide from the infected. No, she hid from something worse-herself, and the memories that haunted her.

I ran as fast as my feet would carry me. My lungs gasped for oxygen. I knew I had to stop, but he could still be following me. I pushed myself harder. I needed to get away, far away. From him. From this. I remember I just woke up one day, and went to work as usual. I drove my squad car around town on patrol, but I saw bodies. Bodies everywhere. They were dead bodies, but they weren't still on the ground. They were walking around. As if they had re-animated. I shook away the memories from the day it started all those weeks ago and focused on my running. It was almost sunrise and I figured I could stop soon. As soon as I knew I was safe. But I know now that I had fooled myself. In this new world, you can never be safe. I'm Katie Greene, and this is the apocalypse.
