Seventeen-year-old Florence Maynard lives a quiet and relatively uneventful life in a small West Country town with her sister, Sadie, and her mum and dad. Florence is about the begin the final year of her A Levels. Her boyfriend, Jamie, is headed off to university and she is feeling somewhat lost.

One afternoon, a young man named Jonah visits Victoria Café, the small cafe owned by her parents where she and Sadie regularly help out. He is different, obviously an out-of-towner, with an air that intrigues Florence, but also makes her wary.

Feeling excluded from her boyfriend's new life and unsure of her own future, an unusual friendship begins to grow between Florence and Jonah, causing friction between the pair and Florence's family. Things get worse when Jamie makes a surprise visit before Christmas. But Florence suspects Jamie of hiding something and, as the lies unravel and the shocking reality is revealed, will Florence ever be able to trust anyone again?
