The truth was, Erebus and Nyx were on a date, they just didn't feel comfortable with coming out, especially because they were in the middle of a war. On the date Erebus gave Nyx a necklace that had some of his essence that she held onto dearly.
Nearly half a millennial later, Erebus was reborn as the son of Poseidon.
