Lady Ariane Troutbeck is one of the ladies-in-waiting of Princess Faith Clarke, the youngest daughter of King Magnus Clarke and of his second wife, Queen Consort Anya Chevron-Clarke.

When King Magnus promises Faith to the son of the near Kingdom of Dilmi's queen, Queen Anneke Maire, Ariane must embark in a journey with Faith, April, another lady-in-waiting and Ariane's best friend, and some knights to the foreign Kingdom.

In the way, however, their carriage is attacked by bandits and they must run away. They meet the Stray Dogs, a group of outcasts who decided to alienate themself from a society who despises them and live togheter as a big chosen family.

Ariane will be capultated in a new kind of world, different from the lavish and elegant one she was used  to.
