A gentle rain fell on the streets of Berlin, veiling the lights of the city. In a small, quiet café, Frederick sat alone at a table, a book in hand that he hardly read. His thoughts were with the soft conversations of the people around him, with the news increasingly speaking of unrest and change. He thought of his family, of the growing threat he could no longer ignore. Despite the warm atmosphere of the café, he felt a cold knot of fear within him. At that moment, the door opened, and Elise stepped in, a smile on her lips that drove away the darkness for a moment. As she sat down beside him, Frederick knew that their connection was stronger than any impending challenge. Yet deep inside, both sensed that the times ahead would not be easy. The rain outside was just the beginning of a storm that could change everything.

I watched, tears clouding my vision, as he walked up the road. He didn't look back. I knew this was as hard for him as it was for me. Although he had said he'd be back, I knew he wouldn't. And I think he knew the same. It was impossible for us to be together. It would have to be a miracle for us to be paired as a marriage. I stepped back after gently wiping away tears under my eyes and shut the door. I let out a few deep breaths. I wanted to run after him and beg him to run away with me, but like I said before, it would be impossible. I looked over to the girls and Miss Jennings, who were patiently waiting in the dining room. I took another deep breath and joined them reluctantly. I looked back out the window, finding Mathias nowhere.
