For Planet Earth, the year 2049 is monumental. In that year, the human population hit carrying capacity at just over 9.5 billion. Cruel, inhumane methods of population control arise in a futile attempt to save the planet. Xavier, Cobalt, Leo, Aris, Astrid, and Saturn are all sent into the anarchist country of Tatem by their parents. The idea is that, under anarchy, no ritualistic executions will be taking place. Although the teenagers have a greater shot at escaping the Era of Death while living as refugees in Tatem, their chances of survival are still extremely slim.
