Shadow the Hedgehog was known for being the anti-social-edge-lord of Sonic's friend group. He never liked Sonic or his friends, but he didn't hate them. He'd rather not have a connection so he wouldn't lose anyone close to him, like Maria, again.
At least that was the original plan.
