Shadow the Hedgehog was known for being the anti-social-edge-lord of Sonic's friend group. He never liked Sonic or his friends, but he didn't hate them. He'd rather not have a connection so he wouldn't lose anyone close to him, like Maria, again.
At least that was the original plan.

Shadow is immortal. Out of all the things he hides, he doesn't ever try to hide that. Many people don't realize this is the reason he refuses to make friends, which is why Rouge and Omega are oddities. Hell, he's even starting to regret ever getting attached. He knows he'll lose them both eventually. But... what happens when somebody he hates gains immortality? What happens when the only other person cursed to be at the end of it all... is his rival? How could he be so carefree and relaxed all the time when it feels as if all of Mobius relies on him? Shadow struggles to find peace as he has constant nightmares and thoughts of his past. He lost his only purpose, Why was he even here? Why did he have to be created if all he's ever brought is pain and suffering to those he loves? He doesn't enjoy being around people, particularly Sonic due to his annoyingly enthusiastic personality contrasting to his own serious, focused one. No one has ever been able to make Shadow feel the way Maria has. No one has been able to make him hope again. On the night of Princess Sally's Birthday Ball, a truth is revealed to Amy about Sonic. Something...unexpected, causes her to run away from the party ashamed. That same night she shows someone the extent of her strength that she holds back. It's safe to say he's impressed...
