When Layla Orion runs away from her home, a cranberry farm in Cape May, she's forgotten by all but one person. The town of Cape May decides that Layla committed suicide, but Olive Kim refuses to believe that her best friend would take her own life. She knows there's only one thing to do: investigate and unravel the disappearance by herself, all while being annoyed by the ever persistent Gio Aglietti.
Struggling to get by as a hotel maid by morning, a waitress by afternoon, and a saxophonist by night, all in the chaos of Queens, New York, Layla attracts the attention of David Langin, a painfully shy boy attending the nearby high school.
