When Layla Orion runs away from her home, a cranberry farm in Cape May, she's forgotten by all but one person. The town of Cape May decides that Layla committed suicide, but Olive Kim refuses to believe that her best friend would take her own life. She knows there's only one thing to do: investigate and unravel the disappearance by herself, all while being annoyed by the ever persistent Gio Aglietti.
Struggling to get by as a hotel maid by morning, a waitress by afternoon, and a saxophonist by night, all in the chaos of Queens, New York, Layla attracts the attention of David Langin, a painfully shy boy attending the nearby high school. He's barely confident enough to speak in front of strangers, forget strike up a conversation with a pretty waitress at the cafe he frequents- lovingly known as The Night Cafe, due to the Van Gogh mural on the wall and the late hours.
As the four teens struggle to discover who they are, what they want, and where their lives are going, their paths end up intertwining in ways none of them could imagine.
