In late September of 1943, Polish thirteen year old Martha (Marta) Turner is given surprising news from her mother who has no interest in politics or anything going on during the war. The news is not only life threatening for Martha and her mother, but it is also extremely dangerous for the person they are helping. Shortly before the news was given to Martha, Jewish thirteen year old Shira Petrenko in Ukraine finds out her parents are being sent to a labor camp but they can't bare to see their daughter die. With great consideration, Shira ends up spending nearly a year in Martha's cellar. The choice Martha and her Mother make changes their lives forever but they knew what was right and what was wrong.
