In 2026, the world plunged into a harrowing new reality, fraught with fear and desperation. Rumors of a terrifying bioweapon concealed in the remote, regions of China spread like wildfire, igniting waves of panic through entire nations. Those unfortunate enough to contract the virus went through a grotesque transformation, with those infected morphing into nightmarish creatures.

Within weeks, cities across the United States changed completely. Places that were once full of life became quiet. The sounds of laughter and business faded, replaced by eerie cries from the transformed. Families locked themselves inside their homes, hoping for rescue, while the streets filled with nightmarish figures-reminders of the people they once knew.

In a desperate attempt to contain the crisis, the U.S. government executed a radical plan: a division of the nation itself. With razor wire and barricades, the country was cleaved in two-a no man's land stretching from Maine to Kansas, a reminder of what had been lost. The Western states, still largely intact, became a refuge for the uninfected, while the Eastern territories succumbed to the virus's relentless advance.

Amid the panic, scientists worked tirelessly in makeshift laboratories until they finally developed a vaccine and much later, a cure. However, time was not on their side; every hour brought new horrors and variants as the infected grew increasingly powerful.

As the sun set on the divided nation, uncertainty thickened the air. Monsters roamed freely, while remnants of civilization clung to hope. The lingering question remained, can they reclaim what's lost, or are they doomed to become the very monsters they fear?

The year is 1964, but the surface has not felt human footsteps for nearly half a century. The Great Retreat of 1919 forced the remnants of civilization underground after World War I spiraled out of control. The war did not end-it merely burrowed deeper. Poisoned by mustard gas storms, chemical fires, and plagues, the surface is a wasteland of twisted metal and abandoned battlefields. Cities stand as hollowed ruins, their streets buried under layers of ash and dust. The sun is a faded memory, its warmth replaced by the choking heat of oil-fed infernos. Humanity crawled underground, carving vast tunnel networks and cavern-cities in the bones of the earth. Here, in the damp dark, people breathe recycled air, eat fungus grown from the dead, and drink from seeping cracks in ancient stone. The tunnels are endless, a maze of bunkers, collapsed mines, and fortresses built into the rock. The deeper one goes, the easier it is to forget the surface ever existed. War never ended-it just changed battlefields. Two factions, trapped in their endless conflict, send wave after wave of soldiers to die in the tunnels. The Golden Empire A militaristic theocracy that foolishly believes that God has not yet mankind. Their soldiers march in formation, clad in gold-plated armor, chanting hymns as they die for a war they cannot win. The Royal Nation A fractured, industrial war machine, where duty replaces faith. They ration food, force conscription, and manufacture war endlessly. Their soldiers wear hate on their sleeves, marching toward death with polished bayonets. Neither side will surrender. Battles are won and lost over mere yards of dirt, trenches collapse under the weight of bodies, and chemical gas drifts through the underground like creeping death. The surface is dead. The underground is soon to follow.

In the heart of Texas, beneath the ruins of a nation that once stood as the world's last superpower, they awaken. Fifty-five thousand soldiers, warriors of the old world, preserved in cryogenic sleep since the twilight of America. With them, their families-men, women, and children frozen alongside the last true remnants of the United States Army. It was a desperate gamble, a contingency plan set in motion by a government that saw the end coming but refused to let the dream die. If the worst should happen, if the bombs fell, these soldiers would be the ones to rebuild. The worst did happen. The world burned. The United States was reduced to ash and legend, just another name lost in the howling chaos of the wasteland. And for 29 years, the vault's technicians kept their watch, aging in silence, waiting for the day the world would be stable enough to wake them. That day has come. In 2106, the chambers unlock. Ice cracks, breath returns, and the army of the past rises once more. They step into a world that is not their own, a world that has forgotten them, a world where law and order have given way to might and madness. But they were not preserved to be forgotten. They were not sent to sleep so that the dream of America would die in the dark. They will reclaim the land. They will rebuild the nation. They will finish what was started. But the wasteland is not a battlefield. It is not a war they were trained to fight. And in this new world, the old rules mean nothing. If they are to bring back the United States, they will have to earn it. Not with guns, not with power-but with will, with sacrifice, and with the sheer, unrelenting belief that America is not just a country. It is an idea. And as long as they stand, it will never die.

This is a second view point from my original story - A Different Virus - Heartfire. I highly advise reading the original book first. Intro: Laura was a happy child without a care in the world. She loved her parents and life was perfect. Nothing seemed like it could go wrong. People started talking about a bad flu that was spreading and sending some into a coma. Her parents grew worried and stocked the house in case of a pandemic. Months later another virus appeared. Her family was shocked when the news people started reporting that zombies were actually real and not just part of a horror movie. They were appearing in every country. Her parents reassured her that none of the zombie sightings had been anywhere close to them. Her life is turned upside down when her father ends up in hospital with the bad flu and mother exiles her upstairs for her safety. She was never allowed downstairs again. Weeks pass and the streets become deserted with the exception of the red eyed zombies that wandered around. One night she notices a swiftly moving figure with glowing blue eyes in the street below. Should she call out or remain silent? Is this fleeting shadow something that can help her or could this mysterious figure be even more dangerous than the zombies themselves? ---------------------- Ranked #1 Apr 10, 2018 (A huge thank you to all who read and voted!) This story is copyright and built from my own imagination. This book was a special request from someone who helped me a lot. This viewpoint has less action than the original. The cover was made by @All_AboutAssymetry. A huge thanks to her! Copyright September 2016. All Rights Reserved. Readers may not copy, alter, or steal this story. It was a Sunday night, family night for the Greens. They were playing a board game when it happened. At exactly 11:11 pm; a time for wishes, a sixteen year old girl wished for true love one day. At that exact moment her window smashed and something flew into her room. It was a flock of them; they attracted the house and only took one thing: the girl. She remembers it clearly, the way she screamed scared out of her mind. The way it grabbed her waist and took off. She remembers screaming for help but no one came to her rescue. Oh how she wishes that she left her safety knife in her room. Then they would be safe. Her family! She just hopes they were fine, but the conclusion that she was taken says that her family would be back to normal soon. She sighs and thinks over her life. From a little kid she was always the loner. But her family loved her to death. It all changed when she turned ten. The world was changing. She remembers the exact day at the exact time. Her birthday; she calls it the hell day. Something bad always happens on her birthday and that year was the worst so far. On February 20/2020 at exactly 2:20 On the news they had let out the horrible announcement. Scientist's experiments had gone wrong. They call them the "Stone Devils". They were escaping from the labs and into our world. Made of stone and all male. Winged creatures that come into the night. Steal and kill their prey. That's what she heard but she didn't believe it until a few nights ago. (kinda like the movie Warm Bodies)

Everything changed when they came out of hiding, terror spread across the world as people began to question if our presidents and our global leaders lied to us and weren't from the same race. The Beasts blended in amongst us as if we were the same, except humans didn't have the same predatory instincts and we couldn't change our forms like they could. Soon after we learnt that we weren't the only species people began going missing. Some were unlucky and taken as something that the Beasts called a Mate that one word made fear spread throughout my veins, I would rather sell my soul than have one of them mutts chain me to them. Six months went by before the government, that was un-tainted by this vile race began to take action into their own hands contacting other countries and militaries causing the great war to happen, sending both my parents off to fight for our rights. Only one of them came back, two months was the longest we lasted before we were overpowered by them. Six years of living in this dysfunctional environment and my hatred had never dwindled. Some people still believed in god and had faith in him, I didn't know what I believed in but I prayed like everyone else that I would get through another day without hearing the soul crushing word 'Mate'. The year is 2096. Computers, and other recognition software with them, have grown infinitely more powerful since the 2010s. Business is thriving. People are running about, living their lives, and generally enjoying themselves with their new 'smart' devices, which, for better or for worse, are actually living up to their name. Finally. Enter outcast Vincent Schorennherr. Her parents [emphasis on her] parents wanted a boy, no luck on that account, and they let her know that every day. You think that's not so bad? Think again. "Sorry, Vincent, but you're going to school anyways, flu or no flu." Well, just before first period, a 'conveniently'-timed password-entry prompt pops on on her phone screen, right as she: 1) Presses the sensor, and 2): sneezes, spreading rhinoviruses all over herself and her phone. She wipes the phone off and goes to class, thinking nothing more of the incident until the next day, when she goes to turn it on and gets a kill screen: "Fatal Error 81-141. The flu's contagious, didn't you know that? Bye now, gone to play Caesar- Veni, vidi, vici and all that." With that, her phone blinks off, and within hours, other phones begin to follow suit. With panic on the rise, and global tensions rapidly following suit, can Vincent and her friends find the cure before it's hard shutdown? **NaNoWriMo 2017** Complete in the sense that I'll probably never write any more of this story. I might edit it someday, though. I had a decent idea when I started, but that quickly went out the window.
