In the summer of 1916, 20-year old Beatrix Linkworth is a brittle girl suffering from tuberculosis, of which her mother had died two years prior, and grieving the recent death of her father in the First World War. Filled with anguish and remorse yet virtually devoid of any hope or sense of meaning, Beatrix abandons her home in London and runs away to the Scottish Lowlands. Yet everything quickly takes an unexpected turn as the girl finds herself trapped in an enchanted forest filled with both wonders and horrors, death and decay. She encounters a community of fae and other magical creatures that have also been trapped a long time ago, and together they search to uncover the myriad of hidden mysteries.
