Elijah Adkins, a young prodigy, discovers a hidden flaw within the internet called the Seraph Code-a remnant of a secret system created by a nation to control the global population. Known as the Nexus, this system contains detailed information about every person, living or dead, but a critical flaw prevented it from being complete: it does not record people's faces. To control someone, the Seraph must know their victim's face.

By accessing the Nexus, Elijah learns he can manipulate reality by writing actions into a person's information. Determined to create a perfect world, Elijah begins using the Seraph Code to shape the fates of others. Meanwhile, his sister, Ketiness Adkins, an FBI investigator, is sent to Japan to unravel a series of unexplainable disappearances.

Unaware that they are on opposing sides, the two siblings become locked in a deadly game of intelligence and manipulation, where every move could alter the future. But as Elijah's control over the Nexus grows, he begins to realize that he's not the only one with something to lose.

In a society both connected and alienated by technology, Kate suspects an actual secret admirer is behind Ecto.
