You are a freshman in highschool in New York City, living with your grandfather and helping him in his restaurant and baby sitting a couple days a week to make extra money, you feel like your living life on auto pilot for a long time, you don't really have any friends until you meet April O'Neil the Sophomore at your school. She also seems like a pretty lonely person occasionally hanging out with a few people, until one day after getting to meet April's dad they both insist on making sure you get home safe, you come across creatures you've never seen before and follow them along on their adventures.
