A random viewing of a photo of Margaret Mead documenting Maxwell Street in Chicago, taken in 1956, immediately transported me back in memory to a time and place that no longer exists.

This is an eulogy to a physical place and time, and a fervent hope for the future.

The cover photo is not mine.

Stella Kidd is a singer at the member's only High Rise Club owned by one of Chicago's richest men, her boyfriend Sal Moretti. But theirs was an empty relationship, and Stella knew that she needed to be more than a trinket on someone's arm. Kelly Severide is a lieutenant at firehouse 51, and in his spare time, he's single, bored.......and lonely. All his romantic liaisons are a series of one night stands, and deep down, he knows that there's an emptiness that needs filling. Until one night at the High Rise Club, Kelly turns around and finds himself mesmerised by the girl singing on the stage. This is a story of finding that 'once in a lifetime love' when you least expect it between two people who are so different....but are everything alike. It's a story of breaking free of someone who is all kinds of wrong for you and finding someone who will do anything to be the right one for you. A story of secrets, lies and girls who are treated like commodities to be bought and sold. Of Mafiosi families who think they can do what they like....and the hurdles Stella and Kelly have to negotiate to be able to be together.... (Ongoing story with regular updates.. I try to get one published every week or so.. The chapters have got longer, so take more time to write! I also try updating Questions and Answers regularly, so please bear with me!) ❤️ Stellaride fanfiction. All the characters ( except a few)belong to the one Chicago universe and not me...

In 1885 a Pennsylvanian oil field produced 77 % of the world's oil supply. By 1889, J.Maxwell's equations for electro-magnetism and H.R. Hertz's, proof inspired Einstein's theory of relativity. By 1841, W.Talbot and J. Herschel had fixed photographic images on silver iodide coated paper. Kodachrome film captured red, green, and blue colours in three layers of emulsion in 1936. J.M. Spangler developed the first successful portable 'Electric Suction Sweeper' in 1908. In 1851, I. Singer added a foot treadle drive to his sewing machines and, by 1900, a shirt could be made in one hour. In 1885, John Starley and William Sutton invented the modern safety bicycle. S. Morse sent his first telegraph message in 1844 and 32 years later, Alexander Graham Bell made the first long-distance telephone call. The rotary Strowger switch allowed connections without an operator in 1891. Banks of these later provided 13,200 voice channels on one coaxial cable. Marconi's spark gap radio of 1896 was crucial during the 1912 Titanic disaster. WHO THE HELL ARE WE? is a series of short books and videos describing the evolution of civilization. Almost everyone on the planet is five times wealthier than their ancestors only 50 years ago. This astonishing phenomenon has also improved health, education, and longevity. The cause; an explosive growth in ideas and productivity. It began when we learned to control fire, evolved articulate speech and stumbled onto the way to create infinite wealth; free trade. The discovery of agriculture made us richer but we also learned how to destroy wealth. Great civilization grew up but then disappeared leaving only incredible ruins and ideas. Later books detail some of the ideas and developments that increased the average life span from about 40 years to more than 80 and the average world income from less than $3 to more than $33 per person per day (and to $140 per day in some countries).

Saving Severide

16 parts Ongoing Mature

From the writer that gave you saving Stella, here is story in an alternative universe, where Kelly Severide is the one that needs saving. The firefighter who dedicates his life to rescuing the people of chicago, is in fact the one who needs saving, as he battles his own flames of addiction, and the harsh reality of trying to maintain a crumbling relationship. Perfecting his "I'm fine"performance with his fellow colleagues, meant his struggles go unnoticed. That is until someone from his past joins the team at firehouse 51, and from her experience she is quick to notice the signs of internal battles. Sometimes the strongest heroes are those who allow themselves to be saved, will Kelly allow himself to become one of them? Is there time to save the saviour?
