For Thom, Colin, Ed, and Phil, senior year is supposed to be their last great adventure-a time to solidify their lifelong bond before the world pulls them in different directions. For Jonny, Colin's younger brother, it's a year of longing, secrets, and quiet hopes as he navigates the bittersweet ache of an unspoken crush on Thom, the one person who seems to truly see him.
But as the group struggles with the pressures of growing up-futures uncertain, friendships shifting, and time slipping away-long-hidden feelings and unspoken truths begin to surface. A weekend camping trip becomes the turning point, bringing their closeness to the brink and forcing each of them to confront what they mean to each other.
Set in the small town of Oxford, where life feels both too big and too small, The Quiet Year is a tender, introspective story about love, friendship, and the fragile beauty of the moments that define us. It's about learning to let go, hold on, and embrace the uncertain path of growing up.
Luna O'Brien, the sister of Ed O'Brien, an aspiring artist in band Radiohead, moves in with Ed and his bandmate Thom Yorke. She becomes extremely close with the band, being by their side during the start-up of their career while she begins her own. The release of their first album doesn't go so well, and the band finds it hard to be launched into stardom so fast, with their first single becoming a worldwide hit. Writing songs becomes more stressful for them, and it doesn't make it easier when Thom and Luna begin to despise each other, which is strange because he was the one she was closest with before... Will the band be able to survive this?
(Although most of the band had graduated in 1991 in real life, for the sake of this story, their last year of college is the end of 1992. Everything else is based on the real events of Radiohead, and I tried making it as realistic as possible. The beginning of the story is also heavily inspired by the story written by @cindybermansgf.)
