Hesitation was written all over his face. It had tensed his muscles and settled deep into his bones, leaving him standing there with clenched fists at his sides as a gentle hand traveled expanses it already knew. The huff of air that left him wasn't quite a sigh, but more like the end to an internal battle happening within a dark mind.

"You deserve better."

He continued to keep his intense gaze on Chaz's face. Not looking away, even when dark hazel eyes flicked up to match his gaze. The scoff that came from the shorter man was more like him trying to stifle laughter. Letting his thumb catch the edge of Slater's mouth as his eyes slowly raked over the older man's face. They were both still so young, but war had changed them in so many ways. They'd grown older and yet were still under thirty. It felt like they were still kids enjoying their summer vacation off from school in some ways, but Chaz knew they were so far from that now.

"Don't we all?"
