Kaz Brekker attends a masquerade ball. He hates the damned thing, but he's there for a job. Distract the merchants, and then get the hell out. The job is simple, practically easy but everything changes when he sees a Suli girl walk down the ivory steps and strike a deal he can't possibly refuse.

Inej Ghafa is the only known person to escape the Menagerie. She's survived so far, but how can she keep living if she's on a constant run and can't leave the city? She requires the help of the infamous Dirtyhands- and if that means visiting some stupid ball and begging him, then she shall.

Tensions rise, and masks fall. Will either achieve what they set out to do-? Or will they both end up in the Reaper's Barge, together, gloveless and hand-in-hand?
