In the quiet village of Nakaswa, Kyakuwa Denis sat by the doorway of his small, crumbling house. The sun cast long shadows on the dirt floor as children ran by, laughing and playing with homemade toys. Denis watched them with longing in his big, brown eyes. His legs, thin and frail, refused to move like theirs.
Denis had been born with a condition that left him lame. His mother told him often, "You are a gift from God, Denis. Your strength is not in your legs but in your heart." Yet, as the days passed, Denis struggled to believe it.
At school, things were harder. The uneven paths were a challenge for Denis to navigate, and most days, he had to sit under the tree outside the classroom because there were no special accommodations for him.
